Last Friday (August 18) was an exciting day for the apprentices involved in the INS-Pire academy as they took to the rocks, tidal inlets and seas in Anglesey for a day of coasteering. Coasteering is an activity where you explore rocky coastline by jumping, climbing and swimming. 10 apprentices were invited to attend, along with their respective company mentors from The Forshaw Group, React Scotland and EG Carter.
The day was supervised by former Marine Commanders from our collaboration with the Armed Forces Covenant. Following the kit issue and safety briefing the youngsters engaged in a progressive, fun-packed programme of coastal exploration, whilst learning various techniques for accessing and egressing the water safely. They were shown and practiced rescue techniques and took time to appreciate the geology of this special environment. The team spent almost three hours in the water in tough conditions, traversing the rock faces, swimming to new locations, and jumping in the water from various heights and features. It was an exciting day, it encouraged confidence and team building and a chance to experience Anglesey’s northwest coastline in all its beauty.
Our managing director Liam Hanlon took part in the day’s activity, he said, “The INS-Pire sponsored days bring together the apprentices to train or take part in an activity. We are grateful to the Marine Commandos who supported this activity.”
The INS-Pire academy is providing 10 days of additional activity including challenge and adventure days, industry days, and charity and community days for its apprentices. The first took place in June and was a training day on Tree Law, focusing on topical issues areas of the laws around trees. Following the coasteering day, the next one is a walking adventure in the Peak District in September and the Subsidence Forum Training Day takes place on Thursday 12 October.
The INS-Pire Academy is designed to help train young people into skilled trades, including building, restoration and renovation, engineering, decorating and loss adjusting. It is hoped it will also help address the looming skill shortage in the industry. In collaboration with over five local businesses and 50 nationally, The Knowsley Apprenticeship Partnership and our INS-Pire Academy have been instrumental in providing over 100 apprenticeship roles across Knowsley, including opportunities within plumbing, plastering, painting, joinery, electrician work and administration.
