Last year, we were delighted to introduce our nominated champions to embody all aspects of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) at The Forshaw Group. Alongside their daily roles within our business, each Champion will be engaged in a number of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) initiatives, to promote and support the environment and sustainability, diversity and inclusion, training and development, digital and automation, and staff health and wellbeing.
Next, we speak with Ben Scott, our ESG Champion for Environment and Sustainability.
Ben is a BDMA claims technician, surveyor and project manager. Our surveyors are the driving force behind what we as a company do. They ensure that we deliver good quality work for our customers, in an organised and timely manner, to ease the burden of what can already be a stressful process. This involves meticulously programming works to ensure they flow smoothly and managing all the planned works to completion. All the while, ensuring that our customers are happy with our services at each of the key project stages.
As our new ESG Champion for Environment and Sustainability, Ben’s role will involve finding ways in which we can reduce our carbon emissions, tracking our company’s carbon footprint, to ensure that the data we produce is accurate.
We find out more about his ESG Champion role:
1. How did you secure your role as an ESG Champion for Environment and Sustainability?
I was approached to be the ESG Champion for Environment and Sustainability by our managing director, Liam Hanlon, as he felt I was well suited to take on the role.
I was delighted to accept it, as Sustainability in Construction was a large part of my course during my time at the University of Liverpool, and this gave me the opportunity to apply what I had learned.
I was also considered for this role as I am currently working towards CIOB Chartership, and Liam believed that this added responsibility as an ESG Champion would be beneficial for me during the process of acquiring the Chartership.
2. What does your new role entail?
As an ESG Champion, my new role entails collecting and collating the data from across our company’s operations that contribute to our GHG emissions and our carbon footprint. Once gathered, this data is then analysed to identify patterns and target areas that can be improved upon, as well as areas that we already perform well in.
Once I have completed this analysis, I will then be able to strategise and present my findings back to the company, along with my proposals for any innovation for The Forshaw Group.
3. What is it you enjoy most about this role?
I enjoy the challenge of the role as it gives me the opportunity to contribute beyond my day-to-day responsibilities as a Surveyor and Project Manager.
I was particularly keen to accept the role as the importance of sustainable construction was imprinted on me during my studies at the University of Liverpool, and this new role will give me the opportunity to contribute to this at The Forshaw Group.
4. What are you most looking forward to as an ESG Champion for Environment and Sustainability?
My goal as an ESG Champion is to make The Forshaw Group a beacon for the construction industry for what can be achieved by sustainable means. I’m looking forward to seeing the outcome of this dedication, it will be highly rewarding.
5. What do you enjoy most about working at The Forshaw Group?
The Forshaw Group is a great company to work for, it invests heavily in its staff and the atmosphere in the office is very easy-going. The company sets its employees up for success and hands you the tools you need to succeed.
6. What next event/initiative are you looking to organise as an ESG Champion for Environment and Sustainability?
My first initiative will revolve around the company’s energy usage across the properties we own in both Liverpool and Wales. My first goal is to reduce our emissions within our offices before then turning my attention to what we produce during travel and project life cycles.
