As chair of The Subsidence Forum, our managing director, Liam Hanlon was thrilled to host the Subsidence Forum Training Day on Thursday 3 October 2024 at Mythe Barn in Atherstone, Leicestershire.
The Subsidence Forum
The Subsidence Forum comprises different industry sectors that work across subsidence (the downward movement of the site on which a building stands) and is open to any organisation or individual involved with insured subsidence risk.
The aim of the forum is to identify the fundamental issues that are common to all and develop a constructive way forward, with members sharing understanding, working together to solve problems, advancing standards and practice, and enhancing the effectiveness and profile of the industry to the benefit of all.
An eventful day
This training day marked the 20th anniversary of The Subsidence Forum, as well as Liam’s last before his two-year term as chair ends in 2025.
Exclusively for members of The Subsidence Forum, 140 delegates attended, with 10 places made available for apprentices from the INS-Pire Academy, to attend the day.
It was an exciting event, with six demonstrations for attendees from a broad range of suppliers and top names in the industry, educating them on the best techniques and services to address subsidence. These included:
- Helifix – on structural repairs, including installation of a pressure injected SockFix anchor for robust reinstatement works, as well as the basic but correct methods of HeliBar crack stitching.
- Mainmark – on ground improvement, including geopolymer injection methods improve ground conditions where buildings are being affected by subsidence.
- Catalyst – on drainage, including equipment pipe coding, a water pressure test, and repair.
- Shire – on site investigation, including a tracked mechanical rig taking samples of the soils and strength testing.
- Maplesky – on carbon and sustainability, including the overlapping and inter-related factors that make a house prone to subsidence, such as climate change.
- Stantec – on sinkholes, including a discussion of recent sinkhole scenarios, and how to reduce the potential for further subsidence that may result in the collapse of a building.
There was also a trade exhibition, which included stands from ASUC, Catalyst, Claims Consortium Group, Mainmark, Shire and Restek. Attendees had the opportunity to speak to the exhibitors and learn about the products, services and technologies available within the sector. These included solutions for structural repairs, ground injection, drainage, site investigation, carbon and sustainability, and more.
Speaking of the event, chair Liam Hanlon said, “Thank you to all our demonstrators and exhibitors for making our 2024 Subsidence Training Day one to remember. Thanks also to the organisers of the event and the Mythe Bran for being such amazing hosts. And thank you to everyone who attended, we hope you enjoyed the day.
“It was great to see members coming together to share understanding, in order to solve the problems caused by subsidence, advancing standards and practice, and enhancing the effectiveness and profile of the industry to the benefit of all.”
