The terms of Loss Adjustor and Loss Assessor sound similar and there is often confusion over the difference between the two job titles. They are both roles within the insurance claim sector but there is a key difference between them. Loss Adjustors work for insurance companies, while Loss Assessors work for insurance policyholders, handling a claim on their behalf.
What is the role of a Loss Adjustor?
Working on behalf of an insurance company, Loss Adjustors decide what will be paid for in the event of a claim. The Loss Adjustor visits a policy holder’s premises on behalf of the insurance company in order to draw up a report to find out all the details, covering whether they think the claim is valid and ensure the amount of money paid out is correct under the terms of your insurance policy. They may also work with any other insurance companies which are involved.
Loss Adjustors have to ensure that they are unbiased and make fair judgements. To ensure impartiality, they have to follow codes of conduct set out by The Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters, General Insurance Standards Council, and The Association of British Insurers.
What does a Loss Adjustor do in the event of a claim?
In the event of a claim, your insurance company will send a Loss Adjustor out to survey the scene and assess the damage. They may take photographs. In order to prevent further damage and the potential for further claims, they are likely to want to take steps to ensure the site is secure.
Following their visit, they will submit a full report to the insurance company on what repairs need doing and the best way of carrying them out, often making recommendations of reliable firms to undertake the work.
