Joe Chellow, a surveyor with The Forshaw Group, recently (September 27) attended the Aviva Insurance mock trial at its offices in Perth, Scotland. The event was hosted by DAC Beachcroft, which is a leading international law business and is a pre-eminent advisor to the insurance market. The session included professional barristers and solicitors to question the claimant, defendant, and witnesses. The audience was able to follow the trial, and it was a great demonstration of how what they do in their roles can affect the outcome of a claim in court.
Joe has worked for The Forshaw Group for seven years as a surveyor. As a surveyor at The Forshaw Group, he has to manage a portfolio of claims from initial notification through to conclusion. Buildings claims often require major construction work, causing a lot of emotional upheaval for homeowners. His role plays a key part in supporting the customer throughout that journey.
Aviva’s event highlighted the importance of record keeping, training records and more, as well as the steps that have to be taken before a claim can occur or be sent to trial. This is applicable for many brokers and clients who manage risk, helping them to understand the part they play within a claim.
Joe found the day beneficial, as it gave him a fascinating insight into the legal process of insurance recoveries following a contentious claim. A mock trial was set up regarding a house fire, and eventually the case was dismissed, but not before they learnt the process that would be taken in this instance.
Joe said of his day, “It was very interesting to see this part of the claim process, that we do not normally see as a building contractor.” The Forshaw Group’s managing director Liam Hanlon added, “it’s great to get the team out and about gaining an insight into areas they wouldn’t normally see. Joe enjoyed the experience.”
The Forshaw Group would like to thank Aviva and DAC Beachcroft for hosting such a worthwhile event.
