Following a series of storms called Dennis, Ciara and George, February 2020 was the wettest on record in Britain. Thousands of homes and businesses suffered from flood.
Since 1998, the UK has experienced six of the 10 wettest years on record and regular heavy rainfall is becoming more common. The Met Office says that 2009-18 was 1% wetter than 1981-2010 and 5% wetter than 1961-1990 for the UK. Scientists predict that, thanks to climate change, if temperatures rise by just two degrees, the number of people living in areas of the UK at most risk of flooding is expected to rise by 2.6 million.
The cost of flooding to business
As well as the human cost of devastation to homes and businesses, flood damage causes a huge economic hit too. The floods of winter 2015-16 cost an estimated £1.6 billion, with over 30% of damages affecting the business sector. As a result of Storm Dennis and Storm Ciara, the Association of British Insurers say that the cost of repairing homes and businesses may reach more than £360 million.
If you have done all you can to protect your business from flooding, what can you do if the worst-case scenario occurs and you experience water ingress into your premises?
