Huyton Restoration Drama

When a main underground water pipe burst in Huyton, Liverpool, the effect was devastating for the local community with 120 commercial buildings and social housing accommodation immediately affected by the flooding.

Along with loss adjustors GAB Robins and insurers United Utilities, Liverpool-based claims management specialists, the Forshaw Group, followed emergency services onto the scene to minimise the spread of water damage and assess its scale and severity  for shopkeepers and residents.

“A fast response in this type of situation is vital to minimise the scale of the damage”, says Forshaw Group Director Jay Calvert whose team led the clean up and reinstatement operation. “The practical elements of such a disaster are really only half the story though. The business owners and householders took the full brunt of what happened in Huyton and our job was to work with all parties involved to get the reparation completed in the shortest possible time so that businesses and homes could get back to normal.”

Working closely with GAB Robins, United Utilities, business owners, residents and the local authority the Forshaw team ended up processing 99% of the 52 claims involved, having initially receiving instructions on just 7 of them. The schedule for re-instatement involved substantial ground floor restoration including flooring, tiling, and kitchen replacements, decoration, plumbing and electrics.

Despite the challenges caused by some of the original non-Forshaw contractors failing to correctly identify problem areas, work was completed in just eight weeks, enabling businesses and residents to move back in earlier than expected.

“In addition to the co-ordination of building and renovation work we were asked to make inspections,  manage outside contractors, be involved in weekly conference calls and perhaps most demanding of all – attend public meetings on behalf of our clients,” adds Jay.  “The success of this project has to be down to the effective communication between all parties involved, supported by the transparency of scheduling provided by our online Information Management System”.
