We were delighted to recently introduce our nominated champions to embody all aspects of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) at The Forshaw Group.
Alongside their daily roles within our business, each Champion will be engaged in a number of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) initiatives, to promote and support the environment and sustainability, diversity and inclusion, training and development, digital and automation, and staff health and wellbeing.
Next, we speak with John-Joseph Calvert BSc (Hons.) MCIOB, our ESG Champion for Training and Development.
John is our Operations Manager, whose role includes supervising, coaching and developing employees, implementing quality assurance plans, and strategising process improvements.
As our new Training and Development Champion, John’s role will also be to engage with our apprentices, assisting them on their journey through college and working life, and ensuring they stay focused on their studies and motivated to pass their End Point Assessment. He will also participate in employer events within local schools, ranging from practice interviews to ‘meet and greets’ with the pupils.
We find out more about his new ESG Champion role:
How did you secure your role as an ESG Champion for Training and Development?
Within my role as Operations Manager, it is my responsibility to upskill the Surveying team, to ensure they have the right skill set to deliver a great service to our clients and their customers. Because of this, I was a natural fit for the Training and Development ESG Champion.
What does your new role entail?
I review the existing competencies and capabilities of our team. If I see an opportunity for growth – in an individual or in the team as a whole – such as via internal training (eg: toolbox talks) or courses provided by external bodies, I discuss this with our managing director, Liam Hanlon, and we agree how/when to implement the learning.
What is it you enjoy most about this role?
I love seeing the development of our next generation of Surveyors and how my actions can positively impact the future of our team. The skills gap is an ominous entity within our industry, and if we don’t do our part to upskill the workers of the future, then we risk decreasing the amount of skilled workers in our industry.
What are you most looking forward to?
Assisting the Surveyors on their personal journeys to completing different courses. For example, on our team, Joseph Chellew will be completing the CIOB’s Chartered Membership Programme, and Ross Elder is completing a HNC.
What do you enjoy most about working at The Forshaw Group?
No two days are the same and the management team is really supportive and motivated to see you – as an individual and as part of the team – do well.
What next event/initiative are you looking to organise as an ESG Champion for Training and Development?
I am currently working through the feedback from the company’s annual reviews of our staff. I will use this as a basis to identify and implement additional training and support where required.
